The Coolmore Classic 2017 during next yearâs autumn carnival is the long-term aim for the John OâShea-trained Ghisoni who will have a light spring campaign without a Group 1 run.

The Godolphin-raced daughter of Lonhro has a consistent record to date of four wins from seven starts, her latest victory being the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben in late May.
A rising four-year-old, Ghisoniâs other Group success was at Randwick in late February where she defeated subsequent Vinery Stud Stakes winner Single Gaze in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (14500m) first-up.
A run at Rosehill Gardens followed when sixth to Peeping in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), a $600,000 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature OâShea has her set for again in 2017.
The filly was last seen running fifth behind veteran mare Cradle Me at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Day in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) as the beaten odds-on favourite.
She will get the chance to atone first-up on October 1 at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day when resuming in the $300,000 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) where OâShea hopes she can continue her undefeated record when fresh (2-2-0-0).
âShe races best on the fresh side and the plan is not to expose her too much,” he told Racing Victoria this week.
“I thought the best run of her campaign was when she got beat in the Arrowfield Sprint at Randwick [finishing fifth and beaten only 1.3 lengths].
“She just didn’t have any luck and I’d imagine that form around Japonisme, Counterattack and the like will be strong this spring.â
Currently Ghisoni is back in pre-training at Godolphinâs Agnes Banks property outside of Sydney and OâShea confirmed she would be kept to the sprint races next time in.
He has ruled her out of a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, October 29, and instead run in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at the same meeting in Melbourne second-up.
It is a strategic move by the stable to keep her out of Group 1 class hoping she can get into the quality handicap Coolmore Classic field with a light weight next year.
“The Coolmore Classic is a race we think is the perfect target in the autumn and it is a race where weight plays a huge part and the mares carrying too much find it difficult,â OâShea said.
OâShea is yet to prepare a Coolmore Classic winner, but the four-year-olds have a good recent record in the race with wins by the likes of Peeping (2016), Appearance (2013) and Aloha (2011).
