2016 Doomben 10,000 Off for Ghisoni

Godolphin’s John O’Shea has all but ruled out a run in Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 2016 for his smart filly Ghisoni.

Plans are to give the three-year-old daughter an easier run at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane this weekend against her own kind in the $150,000 Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m), or run her at home in Sydney.

The call not to run the three-year-old in the $750,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on Saturday isn’t because O’Shea doesn’t think she’d be a competitive force in the weight-for-age classic.

Instead he is looking at the longevity of the youngster and where the future will take her.

“My inclination is to not run her [in the Doomben 10,000], albeit I know she will be extremely competitive,” O’Shea told The Courier Mail.

“It is tempting. The form out of the BTC Cup, where we saw Artlee get beaten on Saturday, does encourage you.”

A winner of three of her five starts to date, Ghisoni’s last turf triumph was first-up at Randwick in late February in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m).

She then went to Rosehill in March running 2.4 lengths away sixth behind the ill-fated Peeping in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) before her last start fifth in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m).

In the Arrowfield on April 9 during ‘The Championships’, Ghisoni was defeated only 1.3 lengths by Chris Waller’s subsequent Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) third placegetter Japonisme after a luckless run.

She also had regular rider James McDonald aboard for the run, as well as her following Warwick Farm trial over 807m on May 16.

This weekend McDonald has been booked to partner Waller’s Darley Classic winner from the spring, Shamardal four-year-old Delectation in the Doomben 10,000.

That’s a strong sign Godolphin won’t be running Ghisoni in the same race, the filly set for a strong gallop at the stable’s Osborne Park property in NSW on Monday morning before a final call on the weekend plans.

Along with the Glenlogan Park Stakes in Queensland, O’Shea admitted the stable was also looking at a New South Wales race on Saturday with the filly.

“She has been a filly we have been extremely patient with,” he explained on Monday.

“She’s just starting to hit her straps and if we look after her we’re going to have a really nice older mare next season in races up to about 1400m.

“Her last two starts just haven’t gone how we wanted them to.

“Had we won the Arrowfield, we would have had good cause to run in the 10,000.

“At the moment it’s all about seasoning her for later on. For a Group 1 weight-for-age race you want to be well and truly seasoned.

“I think she will be vulnerable first-up off a very soft trial, so that’s why she will have a nice burn around [this morning].”

Red hot favourite in all-in Doomben 10,000 betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Ciaron Maher-trained Queen Of The Turf Stakes winning mare Azkadellia ($2.80).

Her major Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival assignment however is the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 11.

Caulfield horseman Maher is wary about how his four-year-old star will handle Doomben Racecourse and what a win in the 10,000 this weekend will do to her Stradbroke Handicap weight.
