A smart trial at home in Sydney has opened up the Group 1 options during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival for the progressive John O’Shea-trained filly Ghisoni.

The three-year-old daughter of Lonhro caught the eye with an easy 807m trial at Warwick Farm on Monday, jockey James McDonald aboard for her fourth to Cheeky Babe in the open three-year-old hit-out.

McDonald was impressed with how the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) winner and Group 1 performer felt ahead of her trip to the Sunshine State where she will kick things off at Doomben Racecourse Saturday week.

“She gave me the feel of a very good filly, which we know she is,” McDonald told AAP on Monday.

“She could have done whatever I asked, but the track was showing some wear by the time she went around so we weren’t out to do anything spectacular today.”

O’Shea was also impressed with the Godolphin-raced filly who he said was most likely to contest the $150,000 Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) over the $750,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 28.

“She’s done well since her last run and we’re looking forward to her coming back in the Glenlogan Park which gives us good options for the rest of her preparation,” O’Shea, who trained the 2012 Doomben 10,000 winner Sea Siren, said.

The bookies are still taking no chances with Ghisoni in all-in Doomben 10,000 betting with Ladbrokes.com.au listing her as the $7 second favourite behind Ciaron Maher’s Stradbroke Handicap-bound mare Azkadellia.

Godolphin’s racing manager Henry Plumptre admitted Queensland’s richest race, the $1.5 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11, was an attractive option for Ghisoni.

She is rated an $11 chance in futures Stradbroke Handicap odds, also led by Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Azkadellia ($4.40), but is yet to be confirmed for the race with the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) a fortnight later also being considered.

“If Ghisoni is kept to fillies’ events she is likely to follow the Glenlogan Park Stud Stakes with the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm on the same program as the Stradbroke at Eagle Farm on June 11,” a statement by Plumptre said on the Godolphin website.

“It might be a more suitable plan to stick to fillies’ races, particularly when we take into account the races that are available to her in the spring.

“We have a forward eye on the Melbourne carnival and whatever decisions we take now will have that in mind.”
